Vitamin D

The sunshine vitamin.

Did you know to get enough vitamin D over the day from the sun you would need 30% of your skin exposed in the highest sun point of the day without sun cream , no clouds for 15-20 minutes. Then that depends on your skin type. That would also be in Australian summer.

It’s no surprise that 1 in 4 Australian’s are deficient in vitamin D and the UK will likely be higher.
This is more likely people who don’t get outside at all during the day.

It’s very difficult to get vitamin from food sources so if you are not getting the sunlight then supplementing will be the next best thing.

Why we need vitamin D

  • Building and maintaining healthy bones via aiding calcium absorption
  • Cognitive health
  • Improve immune system
  • Reduces depressive symptoms
  • It can potentially improve strength

How much do we need?
4000IU’s a day – some studies suggest a higher dosage is beneficial
Here are some signs that you could be deficient

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Aches in joints
  • Vit D deficiency is associated with some cancers and cardio vascular disease

Ask your doctor to check your levels if you feel the above symptoms, it’s quite likely you may need to supplement unless you are outdoors’s in the sunshine a lot. You guys in lockdown should go and get this supplement.
Get one with calcium also as the vitamin D helps with the absorption. If you already have 2-3 servings of calcium a day then just the vitamin D is fine.
