Are calories equal

For those who don’t know a calorie is a unit of energy.

All foods are made up of this energy. The calories come from protein, carbohydrates and fats.

Are calories equal?

Sure a 1 calorie is 1 calorie; however, those calories are broken down very differently in our bodies meaning we absorb different amounts from the food depending on its fiber content.
Let’s take whole almonds.100 calories of almonds go in but only 75 are absorbed Another example is sweetcorn. Up to 75% of the calories are absorbed.

If you blended these foods up into flour, you would absorb the whole number of calories.
Different foods go through different biochemical pathways, some of which are inefficient and cause energy (calories) to be lost as heat

It’s been shown that processed foods are digested more completely meaning you will absorb most of the calories. Eating whole foods however will absorb less calories.

This is just one reason why a calorie isn’t just a calorie when it comes to fat loss. What you eat matters.

Eat the plants 🙂
